I had four concerns that demotivated me from writing:

I don't want to write a fic and stop in the middle.
I don't want to write something that meanders and never ends.
I don't know how any of my fic ideas will end.
I don't want to write something that I'm not going to publish anyway.

I sent those concerns to Iced Fairy, possibly the best Touhou fanfic writer there is.  I got this reply:

All of your problems have an easy solution.  Write something short.  Think of something simple you want to write and just write it.  Polish it and publish it.  You won't stop in the middle because it's not that long.  You'll know the end because the entire point is getting to the end.  And you won't meander because you won't have that much time to do so.  And it'll be published right then and there.

Most big name authors published short works before they ever started pumping out blockbuster novels.  Starting small is the best way to get the experience to make something large.

So that’s what I’ve been doing even since.  Specifically, I’ve been doing a bit a day, every day.

You can do that too.  :)

As motivation, I’m proposing a Page-a-Day Challenge.  It’s simple, you write a page a day, every day.  How much is a page?  That depends on the difficulty you attempt:

• Double-spaced: ~250 words.  You may even feel like you need to write a bit more.
• 1.5-spaced: ~375 words.  About as many words as I can type before I start wondering if I’m done yet.
• Single-spaced: ~500 words.  This is the rate I push myself to write at.

Now when Iced Fairy said “short,” he meant about the size of one of his shorts, or ~2,500-5,000 words.  By comparison, I’ve found that my stories so far are ~3,000 words.

No short story ideas?  Think about how two characters would interact and and base a plot around that.  Or how one character reacts to a particular situation.  Or how a minor situation plays out among several characters.  Or simply lots of 1-2-page scenes.  Keep it simple, basically.

When the next Town Haul happens, we show off what we wrote.  At the slowest pace, you should have a new story every 10-20 days.  If you’re interested, or you have any questions or concerns, let me know in the comments here.  :)
I said pretty much everything I need to up above.  However, I would like to indent the email I got.  Anybody know how to do that in DA?

This I definitely support: reminds me a simpler version of NaNoWriMo, and it looks very practical.

For May, I'm going to focus exclusively on my prose works, so to get my writing engines revved up, I'll definitely have to refer back to this.
